The Rebelz take Tagkeshi's Castle and seize the 2017 Yorkshire Tag Rugby Championships
The third annual Yorkshire Tag Rugby Championships posted the 'Sold Out' sign for the first time in its 3 year history. The event at Stanningley Rugby Club saw more than 300 Tag players come together from Yorkshire, London and Manchester for an epic day of Tag followed by a giant after party and night on the town in Leeds!
The 30 teams taking part in the event started the day playing each other in the group stages before splitting into an A Grade, B Grade Cup, B Grade Plate and B Grade Bowl competitions in the second half of the day. Some strong teams had made the journey north from London and although the London teams dominated the group stages, there were promising signs from some of the Yorkshire teams, two of which, the PteroTagyls and The Taguars, only just missed out on making the A grade competition.
After last years epic golden point drop off win for Tagkeshi's Castle, they again managed to find their way to the final for the second year running. This year's final didn't go to extra time but it was still a close and tense affair with the Rebels assault on the title managing to breach Tagkeshi's Castle's defences enough times to finish 4-3 winners.
The A Grade final was the only one of the four finals on the day not to see a Yorkshire team present. The B Grade Cup was in fact an all Yorkshire affair, with Tag Me Off from Bingley taking on The Taguars from Weetwood. It was another close final, with only one point between the teams and the same 4-3 scoreline as the A Grade Final, but this time it was the Taguars who finished the winners. In the B Grade Plate final, League of Heroic Taggers beat Carry on Tag 4-1 and in the B Grade Bowl final Tag-xi for one beat Eat, Sleep, Tag, Repeat 5 - 4.
This year's event saw a record 12 London teams making the journey north and we would like to give a special thank you to all those teams that made the journey. We hope you all had a great weekend on tour in the sunny North and had safe trips home. We certainly loved having you up here, the colour and fun brought by the teams on tour being a stand out feature of the event.
It wasn't just the London teams that brought colour and fun to the day! There was plenty of this on show all round as the Heroes and Villains fancy dress theme saw one of the best years so far, for both the number of teams and level of effort being made on the fancy dress front. We would like to thank and congratulate all the teams who made the effort, it really did help create a fun and colourful atmosphere throughout the day. Picking a winner was one of the most difficult decisions of the day with numerous teams rightly being able to lay claim for the award. The eventual winners being Tag Me Off who came dressed as Super Mario.
After the Tag Rugby had finished, the drinks started to flow, and the DJ got the party going in the clubhouse. Players then headed to the After After party at Manahatta Bar (Merrion St) in Leeds City Centre just after 10pm where the party continued until late into the night!
