South London Win 2011 London Origin Series
Last Saturday (Sept 24th) produced a superb sunny London Autumn’s day at Twyford Avenue Sports Ground with the South London representative teams bagging the double to win the 2011 London Tag Rugby Origin series. South London went into the A grade match as favourites but had to work hard to break the North London defence with Arron Lombardo scoring the first try of the match in the 17th minute. The game was still there for the taking at half-time with the Southerners slightly ahead 5-2.
North London captain, Thomas Woods who is a current England Tag Rugby representative was inspirational for his side with two tries to his name and setting up a number of others. However, this wasn’t enough for North London who narrowly went down 9-7 in their first ever loss to South London in the A grade division. London Australian representative, Susie Courtney (South London) was named Best on Ground and was awarded a dinner for two at the Octoberfest Pub in Parsons Green.
In the Social grade, it was another evenly fought out contest with South London going into the break ahead 4-2. The Southerners carried on with the first half momentum to seal a 10-5 victory. London Australian representative and South London captain, Thomas Parsons was named Best on Ground and was awarded a £50 voucher to spend at JTS Nutrition.

London Australia Bag the Double at the 2011 Anzac Challenge
The best Australian and New Zealand Tag Rugby talent across London assembled last Saturday (May 7th) to battle it out in the men’s and mixed formats as part of the 2011 Anzac Challenge.
The conditions were prefect at the Anzac Challenge for Tag Rugby as the sun was shining and there was little wind about.
The men’s fixture was a fast paced display which included some sensational diving tags, great backline movement and run away tries. The Aussies started strong and were first to put points on the scoreboard courtesy of a Luke Campbell try. London Australia men’s maintained the lead throughout the match.
At the half-time break the London Aussie men’s team were ahead 7-2 but had to fight off a tough second half comeback by the Kiwis to seal the match 9-6. Luke Campbell was awarded best on ground with Steve Leary and Simon Kang not far behind.
In the mixed, the Aussies were dominant from the get go as female tries flooded in thanks to Melissa Spero, Kylie Jendra and Belinda Walmsley. The Aussies went into the break ahead 11-3 but just as in the men’s fixture the Kiwis produced a fine second half performance. However the Aussies were too strong, walking away with a 17-3 victory. Amelia Brooks was awarded best on ground with a great game and bagged two tries in the process.
North London Ladies Level the Series
The second All Ladies origin fixture between North London and South London took place on Good Friday (April 22nd) at the Twickenham Stoop. South London Ladies had won the first match 8-5 on April 10th so the Northerners were keen to level up the series.
North London Ladies started strong heading into the half-time break up 5-1. South London Ladies bounced back in a much improved second half but it wasn’t enough to secure victory with the Northerners walking away 8-4 victors.
Lauren Attwood and Shelley Niven were great on debut for North London. The experienced Speights Tag Rugby captain, Lee Harrison won the best on ground award followed closely by Melissa Spero.

Inaugural London Ladies Origin Match A Beauty
London produced another superb day for the inaugural London Ladies Origin fixture on Sunday. The best female Tag Rugby talent from north of the Thames pitched themselves against the might of those who live south of the river.
The match was played at an extremely high pace and proved to be a highly entertaining fixture for the 100 strong crowd who filled the Tooting Bec Common.
North London opened the scoring courtesy of a Paula Thorn break away try. South London hit back within a matter of minutes through a brilliant run that led to a break by Amelia Brooks. The teams went into the half time break with South London leading 4-2.
The second half was just as intense as the first with the heat not phasing the intensity of the match. North London’s Nina Populaire bagged three tries but it wasn’t enough for the Northerners as South London secured an 8-5 victory.

London NSW Win Tag Rugby State of Origin
London NSW stormed home to defeat London Queensland 15 – 8 in the Queensland Flood Relief State of Origin Tag Rugby match.
Early in the second half the match sat evenly poised at 6-6 until a Tim Ross break led to Michelle Greentree crossing in the corner for the second of her hatrick of tries. An Arron Lombardo break then ended with Paula Thorn crossing for NSW to take a four point lead. A flurry of late tries to Greentree, Lombardo and Amelia Brooks for NSW, was only countered by an intercept try to Dane Challenor and a third for the dangerous Brad Aird before referee Ben Durston blew full-time
London NSW were well served by skipper Lombardo, Ross and Thorn, whilst Queensland’s performance was built strongly around Challenor’s play making, Aird’s speed and the defensive qualities of Melissa Spero and Rachael Speare.
Early on NSW sprung out to a 4-0 lead with tries from Lombardo, Greentree and Ross. Anita McDonald cut the lead to two by opening Queensland’s account. Tries from Lombardo and Ross for NSW, countered only by Challenor sent NSW in 6-3 up at half-time. Queensland started the second half brighter, with the undoubted highlight of the match being Grant Maskell’s wonderful 40m run down the sideline. The man known as “snake hips” beat four defenders for a great solo try. Two more tries from Aird got the score back to 6-6, before London NSW ran away with the game.
London NSW 15
Male tries (1 pt): Lombardo 3, Ross 2
Female tries (2 pts) Greentree 3, Thorn, Brooks
Queensland 8
Male tries (1 pt): Challenor 2, Aird 3, Maskell

The Try Tag Rugby London England representative side defeated a courageous London Ireland 14-3 on September 25th 2010 at Finsbury Park.
The match which was played at high intensity produced some brilliant tagging and some great attacking flair. Eamonn Sinnott of London Ireland was first to score when he broke through the English defensive line in the 10th minute for a fantastic try.
London England went into the half time interval with a 3-2 lead and the match was still anyone's for the taking. London Ireland captain, Freddy Culazzo sustained a head clash with London England's Alastair Mant moments before half time. Culazzo was taken from the pitch and did not take any further part in the match.
The London England side took full advantage and produced a superb 2nd half to dominate the match with a 14-3 victory. The Irish never gave up and fought gallantly but with reduced subs, the tired Irish couldn't match it with the English.
Best on Ground: James Hillier (London England)
Referee: Jerome Brecard
LONDON ENGLAND 1. Alastair Mant (c) 2. Kolone Yung 3. Lee Miller 4. Mike Morris 5. James Hillier 6. Louis Sebastian 7. Vickie Quarrell 8. Jayne Breakwell 9. Ann Sebastian 10. Rachael Speare

The Try Tag Rugby London Australian representative mixed Tag Rugby side overcame a gallant London England team last Saturday, 18-10 at Battersea Park.
The representative fixture which featured in the Wandsworth council’s Get Active Festival produced some fantastic displays of Tag Rugby in a highly entertaining encounter.
The London Australians who were led by Eye of the Tagger’s, Caliph Snedden looked in control from the get go, taking an early 3-0 lead. The Aussies went into the half-time break 11-5 in front.
The determined English came out strong in the 2nd half and clawed the margin back to 13-9 but the Aussies were too strong in the final 10 minutes with a host of female tries (worth 2 points each) to seal an 18-10 victory.
Lee Miller was named “Best on Ground” for London England with a 5 try performance. Aaron Lombardo of London Australia was awarded “Player of the Match”.
In 2010 Tag Rugby was included for the first time in the Anzac Sports Challenge. Try Tag Rugby hosted games between Australia and New Zealand in both mixed and men's Tag Rugby.
Proceedings were held at Grasshoppers RFC in West London, along side a whole host of sporting events including Rugby Union, Touch Rugby, Aussie Rules Football, Netball, Rugby League and Football.
The overall Anzac Challenge was dominated by the Kiwis, however the Aussie men’s Tag Rugby team produced a rare highlight for the Aussie’s putting in a slick performance to win 14-5.
The skill, pace and fitness of Caliph Snedden, Yamen El-Afifi (pictured, with New Zealand mixed teams' Karen Gordan) and Tom Spottswood told in the second half after teams went to the break level at 4 tries a piece.
The mixed Tag Rugby game was a topsy turvy affair. NZ lead 7-3 at the break before two girls tries in the second half brought the Aussies right back into the game. In the end the class of Sarah Shennan and Ben Claxton were the difference with NZ running out 13-10 victors.
