Try Tag Rugby see participation numbers soar
The number of people playing in a Try Tag Rugby league this summer increased dramatically with more people than ever before playing the sport in London, the Thames Valley and Yorkshire.
Participation numbers across the summer seasons (early summer - May/June and summer - July/August) has increased by 37% in comparison to the same period in 2015.
A total of 991 teams participated in Try Tag Rugby early summer and summer leagues UK wide in 2016, an increase from 720 in 2015.
Try Tag Rugby Managing Director Alistair Davis said: “We’re delighted by the increase this season as we continue our year-on-year growth as a sport.
“Our regular leagues have shown a big increase this year and we’ve also held a number of record-breaking one-day tournaments which have seen upwards of 500 players in attendance."
Gregg Cropper, the RFL's Recreational Services Manager, added: "Tag plays a major part of the RFL's recreational offer and we're thrilled with the huge rise in the game.
"Having attended the recent one-day tournaments, the social atmosphere and fun both on and off the pitch from all participants is great to see.
"The beauty of Tag is it is a sport that can be played at any age, from 6 through to 55+ by both males and females.
"In fact, the most popular form of the game in the Northern Hemisphere is the mixed version of the sport where male and female players compete side by side.
"Female-friendly rules in the mixed game make female players an extremely important part of all mixed teams and generally create a competitive but friendly vibe on the field, with Try Tag Rugby's player base, approximately 40% of participants are female."
