Wigan League to Launch
Try Tag Rugby are excited to announce the launch of a brand new region which will begin operations in Wigan imminently.
Try Tag Rugby, the Rugby Football League’s (RFL) Tag Rugby League partner, is the UK delegate to the International Tag Federation (ITF) and currently operates in London, Bristol, Coventry & Wariwkcshire, Manchester, the Thames Valley and Yorkshire. The Wigan region is the first of two new franchises that Try Tag Rugby will be launching in 2019 as it looks to further expand Try Tag Rugby around the UK.
Tag Rugby is a fun and exciting non-contact social sport suitable for adults; no previous rugby experience is necessary; it’s a sport that can be enjoyed by beginners and experienced players alike and is proving really popular!
Irrelevant of age, gender or experience level, with Wigan having a strong Rugby tradition, Try Tag Rugby will be a great way for supporters, ex-players, player’s partners, current players and people that can’t commit to training twice a week and playing on weekends to still get a rugby ball in their hands and have a run around.
The Wigan franchise is going to be run by Dylan Barlow, who is a current League Organiser for Try Tag Rugby's two Manchester leagues. Dylan will bring a wealth of experience with him from these leagues where he has been an integral part of their rapid growth over the last year. Dylan will be continuing his League Organiser role in Manchester alongside the Try Tag Rugby Wigan franchise.
The Wigan region will start with one mixed league on Monday evenings at St Peter's Catholic High School (WN5 8NU; Map).
Free Taster Sessions will be held on the grass pitches at St Peter' Catholic High School on Monday 29th April and Monday 13th May, with both starting at 7pm.
The league start date is as follows:
Wigan - St Peter's Catholic High School (Mondays) – 20th May
Tag Rugby is a super social sport and a great way to meet new people as well as a chance to meet up with existing friends. The league in Wigan will come with a great after match venue to host Try Tag Rugby weekly post-match socials, where players come together to enjoy a drink with their team mates and opposition.
Try Tag Rugby National Franchise Manager, Carl Duckels commented, “We’re delighted to be launching in Wigan in 2019. Wigan is home to one of the most succesful Rugby teams ever and one of the worlds most famous Rugby locations in either code. Try Tag Rugby is just like Rugby League but without the contact and we are sure the people of Wigan and surrounding areas will love getting involved in Try Tag Rugby.
“Dylan has been an integral part of the rapid growth of our two Manchester Leagues over the last year. During this time he has really helped foster the fun, welcoming and social ethos of Try Tag Rugby and we are sure he will do the same in Wigan.”
Registration for the taster sessions and the league are now open for individuals, groups and teams. If signing up as an individual or group, Try Tag Rugby will put players into a team.

What is Tag Rugby?
Tag Rugby is a minimal contact team game in which each player wears shorts with velcro patches with two tags attached to them. The mode of play is similar to Rugby League or Touch Rugby with attacking players attempting to dodge, evade and pass a rugby ball while defenders attempt to prevent them scoring by "tagging" - pulling a velcro attached tag from the ball carrier. Seven players in each team are allowed on the field at a time, whilst the field dimensions are 70m by 50m. The attacking team has six plays or tags to try to score a try or take the ball down field as close to the line as possible. Tries are worth one point and there are no conversions. In mixed Tag Rugby, female tries are worth two points.
