What is Tag Rugby?

Tag Rugby is a minimal contact team game in which each player wears shorts with velcro patches with two tags attached to them. The mode of play is similar to Rugby League, Touch Rugby or Rugby 7’s with attacking players attempting to dodge, evade and pass a rugby ball while defenders attempt to prevent them scoring by "tagging" - pulling a velcro attached tag from the ball carrier. The attacking team has six plays or tags to try to score a try or take the ball down field as close to the line as possible. Tries are worth one point and there are no conversions. In Mixed Tag Rugby, female tries are worth two points. The team scoring the most points will win the game.

Isn’t Tag just for kids?

The game of Tag Rugby began in Australia in 1992 as an adult sport. The game spread quickly to New Zealand and Ireland, where in all 3 countries Tag is one of the most popular adult sports in the country. There are over 130,000 registered players in Australia, 30,000 adult players in Ireland and 10,000 in New Zealand.

Whilst Tag Rugby is a hugely popular game in the UK for teaching the basics of Rugby to children, the rules of adult Tag Rugby are quite different, providing a more complex and enjoyable sport than the children’s version of the game. Try Tag Rugby also use Tag Rugby shorts in our leagues, as opposed to Tag Rugby belts. This make for a far cleaner and safer game.

What is the difference between Tag Rugby & Touch Rugby

There are a number of differences in the rules of Tag and Touch Rugby. The main difference is a tag needing to be removed to constitute a tackle, as opposed to making a touch with Touch Rugby. The other main features of Tag that are different to Touch include kicking being allowed, the ball being allowed to touch the ground and a marker being allowed to stand in the ruck. This means the dummy half can score tries or be tagged. 

How long does a Tag Rugby match last?

A standard match is 40 minutes long, consisting of two 20 minute halves. At a few venues games may be shorter or longer. In this case the match length will be noted in the league details section of our website. Matches at festivals are shorter due to teams playing a series of games over the day. The amount of game time over the course of the day will be advertised in the lead up to each festival.

How does the scoring work?

A try is scored when the ball is placed on or over the try line in a controlled manner. There are no conversions. A try is worth one point, except in the mixed leagues where a female try is worth two points. Involving the female members of your team is therefore essential for success in mixed Tag Rugby.

How big is a Tag Rugby pitch?

A 7 a side Tag Rugby pitch is generally between 42 and 50 metres wide and 35 to 70 metres long. 6 a side pitches are proportionally smaller in width. 8 a side pitches are 50 metres wide and 60 to 70 metres long.  A typical standard Tag pitch runs across half a full-sized rugby or football pitch, making two tag pitches on a full-sized pitch. No posts are necessary.

Do I need any rugby experience to play Tag Rugby?
No. Tag Rugby is an easy game to learn, and there are many players taking part in our competitions who have never played any form of rugby before.  New players and teams are able to learn the game in our beginner standard leagues. Very experienced Rugby players do also play the game and if you are one of these players our A Grade leagues will be a good test of your skills and fitness.  If you are unsure about commiting to a league you can always register for one of our free taster sessions.

Do I need to be super fit to play Tag Rugby?
No. Tag Rugby can be played by players of varying levels of fitness. Although games are 40 minutes long rolling substitutes are permitted allowing you to come off the pitch for a breather as many times as you want! Regardless of your starting fitness level playing Tag Rugby is a great way to improve your fitness and stay healthy.


PLAYING ON A TEAM

How many players on a Tag Rugby team?

In Try Tag Rugby competitions, a team is generally made up of seven people on the pitch at any time. In mixed leagues three of these must be female and four male. With space for full size pitches being limited in London, in recent years we’ve introduced 6 a side pitches at a number of venues. 6 a side mixed leagues are played with 3 male and 3 female players on the pitch. The number of players on the pitch for each league is noted in the league details.

The ideal number of players in your squad will vary depending on the commitment of your players. Generally we have found that most 7 a side teams have a squad of around 12 players, having 7 guys and 5 girls. But if your players are highly committed, very fit and not wanting to spend time on the substitute’s bench you may wish to enter with a smaller squad

Can I play Tag Rugby if I don’t have a team?

Yes you can register as an individual and after payment is received we will find a place for you on an existing team or create a new team for you and other individually registered players. Playing in a team of individually registered players is a great way to meet new people. Many individually created teams last for years, with team mates becoming friends for life.

If you would like to enter as a group of friends but don't have enough for a whole team, just enter as individuals but specify on the registration form or by email to info@trytagrugby.com who your friends are so we can do our best to keep you in the same team. Alternatively if you have at least half a team, you can register as a team and email info@trytagrugby.com for a pro-rata team fee price. As long as sufficient notice is provided (please email us at least one week before your league is due to start), we can potentially top up your squad with individually registered players. If you are paying a pro-rata team fee, Try Tag Rugby reserves the right to add extra players to your squad to help cover the cost of team entry.

What should I do if I want to start my own Tag Rugby team?

You have a number of options:

  • Ask your work colleagues. A large number of Tag Rugby teams play with their company's backing and support. Tag Rugby is a great team building exercise and an excellent way for everyone to get out of the office once a week for a bit of fun and socialising and some healthy sporting action.   • Ask your friends and family. Tag Rugby is a great way to meet up with old friends from school or University on a regular basis. And because you are taking part in an outdoor, social activity, you will all benefit from a fitness point of view as well! Plus you can head into the after match venue after the game to discuss the match and catch up on old times!
  • Ask your teammates from other sports. In recent years, various sports teams such as Rugby League, Rugby Union, Touch Rugby, Football, Netball, Australian Rules Football, Gaelic Football, Hurling, Basketball, Hockey – even Dodgeball have played Tag Rugby to keep them in shape during their off-season or as an alternative sport one night a week.
  • Put a message on your Facebook or email everyone in your contacts. With people drawing friends and colleagues from many different social networks, with a little bit of effort it’s not hard to find enough players to form a team. If one or two of your new team mates also contacts their networks, you’ll have a team in no time!  

 

How can we find extra players for our Tag Rugby team?

See above.  In addition if you are looking for extra players – for example, you are short one week due to some players going on holidays – put a post on the wall of the Try Tag Rugby Facebook group and post a recruitment ad stating exactly what you are looking for (male or female, what venue, what night etc). Hopefully you will get some responses and then be able to recruit these people onto your team.

Alternatively to use the Try Tag Rugby ringer database, team organisers can log into their profile on our website here, or just click through from the availability emails and you are automatically logged in. Then click on Find Ringers on your control panel to the right of the screen. You then select the fixture and the gender of the player you are looking for and a list of available ringers is produced. You can then contact the ringers via email or text message.

Lastly, you could try putting a free advert on a sports team partners section on Gumtree, join a website like Totally Sporty or Meetup.  

Can I try Tag Rugby before signing up?

Try Tag Rugby offers free taster sessions on occasions throughout the year, with many scheduled for April heading into the busy early summer season and June prior the summer season. Free taster sessions are run by our experienced league supervisors, taking you through the basics of the sport before heading into a game. If you have a whole team looking to play but wish to have a team taster session before signing up, please email info@trytagrugby.com. This often works well with corporate teams where you can publicise the free taster session throughout your office or on your work intranet.

If you can’t make a free taster session but would like a free trial in a competition match, this can be often be arranged by emailing info@trytagrugby.com. Tag Rugby shorts can be lent to you for the match, please bring a card (ie Drivers license or oyster card) to exchange for the shorts.


MEN’S, MIXED OR LADIES’? WHICH TYPE OF LEAGUE SHOULD I CHOOSE

The type of league you choose will be dependent on your skills, background and what you are looking to get out of your Tag Rugby experience. Many players play mixed one night of the week, and men’s or ladies’ on another night.

Mixed leagues are by far the most popular in London. The friendly vibe at the ground and after match venue keeps players coming back as much for the social side as the Tag Rugby. The two point scoring rule for ladies’ strongly encourages girls to get involved in the play making mixed Tag Rugby a true team game.

Single sex leagues are very popular in Australia and New Zealand though less popular in London. Both men’s and ladies’ leagues have their strong points.

Men’s leagues are generally a higher standard than mixed leagues. Games are faster, providing a more strenuous workout. The vibe of the match is often more competitive.

Ladies’ leagues have two major drawing points for female players. For experienced or more skilful players it’s a great opportunity to get your hands on the ball more than you would in a mixed game and practice skills such as kicking that are often the domain of male players in a mixed game. Ladies’ leagues are also a great way for new players to settle into Tag Rugby, learning the basics before moving on to a mixed team. Specific details on all our leagues can be found via the Leagues link under the Locations menu at the top of the website.

WHAT IS THE LEVEL OF SUPER LEAGUE, A GRADE, INTERMEDIATE OR BEGINNER GRADE?

Within our mixed leagues, there are generally four levels of competition; Super League, A Grade, Intermediate Grade and Beginner Grade. Mixed Beginner Grade is generally for new teams, or teams which have been playing for less than a year with little Rugby experience. New teams with plenty of contact Rugby or Touch Rugby experience could opt to start in a Beginner Grade, but may be better considering an Intermediate Grade. The Intermediate Grade is generally for teams that have been playing a while, but aren’t ready to step up to A Grade. A Grade is for more experienced teams. Teams in this grade generally feature a mix or experienced Tag players and skilful Rugby League or Rugby Union players. Super League, is run once a week year round. This is the ultimate A Grade league for the best mixed teams in London. The Super League is currently held at Rotherhithe on Wednesdays in Autumn, Winter and Spring and at Canada Water on Thursdays over summer.

Try Tag Rugby reserves the right to grade teams where we see fit. Playing at your correct level is the best way to maximise your enjoyment of the game. Our supervisors watch all teams closely, so that teams are put at their correct level to the best of our knowledge. At some venues round one may be a deemed a grading round. Specific details regarding the likely grades at each venue for all our leagues can be found via the Leagues links under the Locations menu at the top of the website. Please note, on some occasions the advertised grades may differ to those that end up running at a venue for a particular season, due to differences in the actual number and standard of teams which register for a league, from those which have been anticipated.

A rough guide to the standard of each grade is as follows:

Beginner: Little or no experience of playing Tag Rugby or Rugby of any form

Intermediate: Experience of playing a couple of seasons of Tag at beginner grade or moderate experience of playing Rugby of any form

A Grade: Experience of playing a number of seasons of Tag or experienced rugby player of any other form

Super League: Experienced Tag Rugby player or experienced rugby player who has played at least one season of Tag Rugby previously.

All standards: These leagues will include a mixture of players of all standards and are therefore open to all players.

Please note the guide on gradings is aimed at whole teams. If you sign up individually, it’s likely you will need to start in a beginner or intermediate grade, even if you have great experience of tag, or other forms of Rugby. Please however do request if you wish to be placed in a higher grade and we will do our best to find you a team.


HOW DO I TO REGISTER A TEAM FOR A TRY TAG RUGBY LEAGUE OR EVENT?

What does a team organiser have to do?

The team organiser is the person responsible for entering a team into a league, making sure the team has enough available players each week, collecting team fees off each player and arranging payment of the league fees. The team organiser can also receive a summary of player availability from the weekly availability emails sent out to each player. Each team is allowed as many team organisers as they wish, and team organising duties can be shared amongst a team or changed from season to season.

Try Tag Rugby understand that team organisers play an important role in the success of our leagues and events.  From 2015 we have held a monthly prize draw for all team organisers of current league teams. Winners are announced on the 1st of each month on the Try Tag Rugby Facebook page.

There are three sets of instructions for entering teams, depending on whether you are new to Try Tag Rugby, wishing to re-enter an existing team or a current player wishing to enter a new team.

New Player – Wishing to enter a whole new team

  1. Go to www.trytagrugby.com
  2. Click on “Register as a New Team” on the right hand side of our website.
  3. Select your venue of choice
  4. Enter your team name and select your league of choice. Then fill in your personal details and click submit
  5. You will be sent a confirmation e-mail to the address you entered in your personal details.  To continue with the registration you need to open this e-mail and follow the instruction to confirm the e-mail address with Try Tag Rugby.
  6. Follow the link and add players to your squad. Click on proceed
  7. Choose your payment option. No team places are confirmed in a league until Try Tag Rugby has received at least the £100 deposit.
  8. That’s it! You are finished and your team is now registered in a league. If you have any special requests such as the need for extra players or kick-off time preferences, please email info@trytagrugby.com at least one week before your league is due to begin. If correspondence is received later than 1 week prior to the league beginning, it’s unlikely we will be able to help you.

Existing registered player – Looking to re-enter a team in a new league or new season

  1. Log in to your profile on the Try Tag Rugby website
  2. Click on “My Teams” in your control panel
  3. If you are a team organiser, you will see a hyperlink at the bottom of your team profile saying “Register this team for a new league or season”. If you do not see this hyperlink, then you are not listed as a team organiser of your team. To become a team organiser, ask your current team organiser to login to their account and change your status from regular player to team organiser. Alternatively, email info@trytagrugby.com and we can make this change for you.
  4. Choose whether you are re-entering your team in a league or creating a new team. (Note if you wish to change your team name, just re-enter your current team and change the team name later by clicking on “My teams” and then clicking on “Rename this team.)
  5. Select your venue of choice
  6. Select your league of choice, update your personal details and click submit
  7. Add or edit the players in your squad. Note all squads should be up-to-date each season so that all players are registered. Click on proceed
  8. Choose your payment option. No team places are confirmed in a league until Try Tag Rugby has received at least the £100 deposit.
  9. That’s it, you are finished and your team is registered in a league. If you have any special requests such as the need for extra players or kick-off time preferences, please email info@trytagrugby.com at least one week before your league is due to begin. If correspondence is received later than 1 week prior to the league beginning, it’s unlikely we will be able to help you.

Existing registered player – Looking to enter a new team

Log in to your profile on the Try Tag Rugby website

  1. Click on “Register as a New Team” on the right hand side of our website.
  2. Select your venue of choice
  3. Choose a team name and select your league of choice. Update your personal details and click submit
  4. Add the players in your squad. Note all squads should be up-to-date each season so that all players are registered. Click on proceed
  5. Choose your payment option. No team places are confirmed in a league until Try Tag Rugby has received at least the £100 deposit.
  6. That’s it, you are finished and your team is registered in a league. If you have any special requests such as the need for extra players or kick-off time preferences, please email info@trytagrugby.com at least one week before your league is due to begin. If correspondence is received later than 1 week prior to the league beginning, it’s unlikely we will be able to help you.

HOW DO I REGISTER AS AN INDIVIDUAL FOR A LEAGUE, EVENT OR INDIVIDUAL ONLY EVENT SUCH AS THE INTERNATIONAL CUP, LONDON ORIGIN OR PROVINCIAL CHALLENGE?

Try Tag Rugby strongly encourages individuals to register for our leagues and events. We know a good number of our players have moved to London from elsewhere in the UK or overseas and may not have the networks of friends, family and colleagues to form a team of their own. Where possible we use individually registered players to form whole teams. These teams generally bond quickly, with players becoming friends over the course of the season. We take great pride seeing these teams take shape and even start socialising together outside of Tag Rugby. If we can’t create a whole team of individuals we will do our best to place you in an established team. In the rare case where we can’t place you in a team, we’ll of course offer a refund or the chance to switch to a different day, league or venue.

Individual only events such as the International Cup, London Origin Series and Provincial Challenge are fantastic ways to meet Tag Rugby players from all over London and the World. If you’ve only ever played Tag Rugby with your friends or work colleagues, we strongly recommend giving one of these tournaments a go! The Tag Rugby is fun and competitive by day, but it’s the after party that is often the highlight!

To register individually for a league there are two options:

Register individually as a new player

  1. Choose register as a new individual on the right hand side of our website.
  2. Fill out your personal details
  3. Choose the league you would like to register for or leave this section blank if you are still deciding which league to officially join.
  4. Confirm your email address
  5. If you officially registered for a league, confirm your place by paying the registration fee as soon as possible. Payment is due one week prior to a league kicking off. Note all places are allocated on a first to pay basis. Payment will be prompted during the registration process. If you leave the process, you can make your payment be logging back into your account and clicking on “my statement”. Your personal bill is at the bottom of this page beneath the statements of any teams you are in.
  6. Once payment is received you are finished and you are registered in that league. If you have any special requests such as being placed in the same team as friends who have also registered, please contact us at least one week before your league is due to begin. If correspondence is received later than 1 week prior to the league beginning, it’s unlikely we will be able to help you.

Registering individually as an existing player

  1. If you’re an existing Try Tag Rugby player, login to your Try Tag Rugby account. If you’ve forgotten or don’t know your password it can be resent to your email account.
  2. Once logged in, click on “register as an existing individual” on the right hand side of our website or from within your control panel.
  3. Choose the league you would like to register for.
  4. Confirm your place by paying the registration fee as soon as possible. Payment is due usually one week prior to a league kicking off, but often up to 3 weeks prior to an event such as the International Cup. Note all places are allocated on a first to pay basis. Payment will be prompted during the registration process. If you leave the process, you can make your payment be logging back into your account and clicking on “my statement”. Your personal bill is at the bottom of this page beneath the statements of any teams you are in.
  5. Once payment is received you are finished and you are registered in a league or event. If you have any special requests such as being placed in the same team as friends who have also registered, please contact us on info@trytagrugby.com at least one week before your league is due to begin. If correspondence is received later than 1 week prior to the league beginning, it’s unlikely we will be able to help you.
  6. If you suddenly become unavailable for a league or event after payment has been sent (such as injury) and you notify us at least one week in advance of the league event or event being held, we are only too happy to offer a refund or credit towards a future event.

I signed up as an individual, how do I meet my team? Who is organiser for a team of individuals?

If you signed up as an individual for a league and confirmed your place with payment, details of your team will be circulated in the season launch email approximately 4 days before the league begins. If you are placed in an existing team, your contact details will be passed on to the team captain. You should aim to arrive 20-30 minutes before you first match to meet your new team mates.

In the case where a whole team of individuals has been formed, your league supervisor will speak to the team after round one, and ask who is interested in becoming the team organiser. The person who is team organiser can then access the contact details of all players in the team by logging into their account and clicking on my teams, scrolling down to the team and then clicking on view existing players. The organiser can then send a weekly email around to the squad, to create pre-match banter and confirm numbers for your weekly fixture.

I want to play but can’t commit to a whole season

If you wish to play but are unable to commit to a season there are still ways to get involved by playing occasionally. The first way is to join Try Tag Rugby’s ringer database. People on this database can be contacted by team organisers looking for players to fill in for their team on occasions when the team is short. To join the database, log in to your profile on the website, click on “my profile”, scroll to the large box at the bottom to make sure you have ticked the box saying “I would like to be registered as a ringer” then select the days and venues that you would be available to play at on occasions. Lastly make sure you tick the box for “contact me via email”. It’s unlikely as teams will use the SMS system, but you could also tick this box.

The second way to play occasionally is to sign up for a weekend event. Try Tag Rugby has a number of weekend events throughout the year. At these events you play a series of round robin matches and finals, over the course of around 4-5 hours. The day concludes with a presentation and an after party.

Can I pay and play on a match by match basis? Why not?

Unfortunately due to the large number of players participating in our leagues it is not possible to offer payment by the game.

WHAT HAPPENS AFTER REGISTERING?

After registering and confirming your place with the deposit payment (£100 for teams or the full fee if you register individually), you will receive an automatic confirmation email. Approximately 4 days out from the league beginning, you will receive the season launch email from Try Tag Rugby regarding the draw, individual players allocated to teams and details specific to your venue. If your league is due to start in two days time and you are yet to hear from us, please contact us on info@trytagrugby.com.  

CAN I ENTER A TEAM AND OUR PLAYERS PAY INDIVIDUALLY?

No. The only teams which are allowed to pay individually are teams where players have registered as individuals and been put together by Try Tag Rugby. After one season together, these teams should switch to paying as a team, which works out far more cost effective for all players.

The team registration fee charged by Try Tag Rugby is heavily determined by the cost of pitch rental at your venue. Hence if you enter a team, you are liable for the full team registration fee unless a pro-rata team fee has been agreed with Try Tag Rugby at least one week prior to your league kicking off. If you are paying a pro-rata team fee, Try Tag Rugby reserves the right to add extra players to your squad to help cover the cost of your team entry.

If your team organiser or you, if you are the team organiser, are reluctant to pay the team entry upfront, and then recover the registration fees from squad members, it is possible for team members to proportionally pay off the team registration fee by logging into their profile on our website, clicking on “my teams”, finding your team of choice and then clicking on “make a payment” for the team. For this system to be used, you will need all players to be registered in the squad with valid email addresses. Please note proportional payments are strictly only accepted via payment on our website. No proportional team payments can be accepted into the Try Tag Rugby bank account or in cash at the venue.

When is the balance of the team registration fee due?

If your team paid the £100 deposit (as opposed to the full amount) to confirm your place in a league, the remaining balance is due by kick-off of your round two match. All teams that have paid in full by round two will receive two bonus competition points. If your team can’t pay by round two, you have until round three to complete your team payment. If your team hasn’t paid by round 3, your team will not be eligible to gain competition points and your team will be docked two points for each week payment this hasn’t been made.


EQUIPMENT, YOUR LEAGUE AND AT THE VENUE FAQs

How do I check whether the competition is on if there is bad weather or some other event causing disruption?

It is very rare that Try Tag Rugby cancels a league or event. We strive to avoid cancellations. For instance, a day on constant rain would generally not lead to a cancellation. However there are occasions due to health and safety concerns that we need to cancel or if a venue takes into their own hands to close their pitch. If a pitch was flooded or frozen over with ice and snow then this would cause a cancellation.

Our policy is to provide notification of any cancellations via email to all registered players and as a post on the facebook group by 4pm,

What equipment do I need?

  • Try Tag Rugby approved Tag Shorts are necessary for playing the game, as they contain the Velcro on each hip where the official match tags are attached. All tag players must wear Try Tag Rugby approved Tag Rugby shorts, which are available to pre-purchase from our online shop or to buy from the competition supervisor at your venue in cash for £12. Other reputable brands such as ITRA, Oztag or SAS are also acceptable. For health and safety reasons – the official shorts do not have pockets and are at a specific length to help significantly reduce finger injuries caused by grabbing a tag. In comparison to Tag Rugby Belts (which are illegal in Try Tag Rugby leagues) shorts enable a better and faster game with less injuries. Brands of shorts which are shorter than the length of the tags (For example Kooga) are banned from our leagues on safety grounds.
  • Footwear. The best footwear is boots with blades or rubber studs as they are good on both dry and wet grass. Boots with metal studs are not allowed! Runners or trainers are OK but may be too slippery for wet conditions, and are not recommended for grass leagues outside of summer. Boots are very strongly recommended for grass leagues in the late autumn and winter seasons. Some leagues are also played on 3G (3rd generation artificial grass) and Astroturf surfaces. If you’re playing on Astroturf, special Astroturf football boots provide the optimal amount of grip. Please check the competition details section of our website for information on the surface at your venue. It is possible to pick up a cheap pair of boots for under £20 at sports stores such as Sports Direct or Decathlon. 
  • Team Kit. We recommend, but it’s not essential, that your team all wear the same coloured shirts as this makes it easier for players and referees to distinguish between teams. Though it should be noted that each team will be handed a different coloured set of tags for each match. Hence a referee will tell the teams apart by the colour of your tags. Try Tag Rugby approved Tag Rugby shorts and Tag Rugby Tights are available to pre-purchase from our online shop or buy at your venue form the competition supervisor in cash (shorts cost £12). These unique shorts (with Velcro on the sides) are specifically designed for safety and quality of play.

What if I forget my shorts?

If you forget your shorts one week then don’t worry, Try Tag Rugby offer hire shorts, available to rent for £4 a session. Please note Try Tag Rugby is the only Tag Rugby organisation in the world who offers this service. If you forget your shorts in Australia, New Zealand or Ireland you would need to purchase new shorts or borrow a pair off a team mate to take part. The £4 fee is used to cover the cost of washing, reward the players who bring their shorts weekly and discourage abuse of this offer.

How do I order custom kit?

The first thing you need to do is come up with an idea for a design and send it in to us. When the final design has been approved you will then need to fill in an order form which will allow you to specify sizing and quantities. How can I see the league fixtures or table?

Fixtures and tables for all leagues can be seen by going to the Locations menu on the website and clicking on Fixtures & Results under the region that you are playing in.

How is the winner of the league decided?

The winner of each league in generally decided by a Grand Final match. The teams that play in the Grand Final are either the two highest finishing teams on the table after the regular season, or the winners of the semi-finals. Even if your team fails to make the semi-finals or finals, your team will still have play-off matches on these final weeks of the season. The exact format of your league will be communicated via email throughout the season.

How do you decide player of the match, player of the tournament etc? How can I find this?

Player of the match awards are decided by the referee of each fixture. At the end of the season an award is given to the player with the most player of the match awards for the season. An up-to-date table of player of the match statistics for each league can be accessed from the standings or competition table section for your league on our website.

What facilities does the venue have? Toilets, showers, changing rooms, lockers – how do I find out?

The facilities for your venue will be noted in the season launch email. They are also noted in the competition details section of our website.

Am I covered by insurance if I get injured playing in a Try Tag Rugby league or event?

Whilst we consider Tag Rugby a very safe sport which can be played be players of all shapes, sizes and fitness levels, like all sports there is a small risk of injury. There is also a very minor risk of sustaining a bad injury. This is why Try Tag Rugby through our partners the RFL provide Personal Accident Insurance to all registered players in case of catastrophic injuries.

Thankfully since beginning in mid 2009, and with tens of thousands of matches played, we have had no such events take place in our leagues. We strongly hope that no Try Tag Rugby player shall ever suffer such an injury.

However with our Personal Accident Insurance we have the peace of mind that if anything bad was to happen to one of our players, they would have insurance cover.

What should I do if I notice an incorrect score for my match?

It is the team captain’s responsibility to check the score at half-time and full-time with the referee. If the team captain thinks there is a discrepancy, they should raise the issue immediately.

If your team would like to query the result of a match, you should contact your competition supervisor within one week of the match in question. Once the week period has passed, we will not be in a position to change match results.

How do I change my team name?

The option to change your team name is only available to team organisers. To become a team organiser, ask your current team organiser to login to their account and change your status from regular player to team organiser. Alternatively, email info@trytagrugby.com and we can make this change for you. To change the team name log in to your account in the top right hand corner of our website. If you have forgotten your password, you can ask for a password reminder to be sent to your email account. Then click on my teams, find the team you wish to rename, and next to the team name will be a hyperlink saying “rename this team”. Change the team name and then click on update, to save the changes.

How do I check what money I owe?

Log in to your account in the top right hand corner of our website. If you have forgotten your password, you can ask for a password reminder to be sent to your email account. Then click on my statement, and scroll to the bottom of the page to get to your personal statement. Above your personal statement will be the statements of any teams you belong to.

How do I pay the outstanding balance on my account?

Log in to your account in the top right hand corner of our website. If you have forgotten your password, you can ask for a password reminder to be sent to your email account. Then click on my statement, and scroll to the bottom of the page to get to your personal statement. Click on make a payment for this bill, enter the amount you wish to pay and click make payment. You will then be transferred to Paypal. Please note, you don’t have to login to or create a Paypal account, if you don’t wish too. You can simply just enter your card details.

Above your personal statement will be the statements of any teams you belong to. This is where you can make part payments against your team fees.

How do I let my team know my availability for matches?

Each week before your fixture you will receive two reminder emails.  On these you will have details of you fixture time and who you are playing.  The email will also contain two links, the first one in green allowing you to indicate that you are available for a match and the red link allowing you to indicate that you are not avaiable for a match.  Your team organiser will get a notification as soon as you click on the link.

If you haven't received a reminder email that you believe was due, please check your mail's spam folder first incase it has gone there.

You can also indicate your availability for any scheduled matches by logging into trytagrugby.com and clicking on the calendar link in the control panel at the top of the page.  In the calendar that appears, you can click on scheduled fixtures that appear as stick figures and change you availability in the drop down menu that appears. 

How do I become a ringer?

If you can’t commit to playing regularly, are looking to play occasional games on another night of the week or don’t mind playing a second game at your venue, a great way to get notified of opportunities is to join our ringer database. To join our ringer database, log in to your account in the top right hand corner of our website. If you have forgotten your password, you can ask for a password reminder to be sent to your email account. Click on my profile, scroll down to availability details, tick the box saying I would like to be registered as a ringer, select the venues you are interested in playing at, select the days of the week you are interested in playing at, and tick the boxes for email or SMS notification (note we are not aware of anyone who uses the SMS system, so your best chances of being contacted are via email).

A second way to pick up extra games is to join our Facebook group. Almost daily there are last minute requests from teams looking for extra players for their upcoming match.

Please note, players who play for higher grade teams at a venue, are not allowed to fill in for teams in a lower grade. So when responding to any ringer requests, please first check the team you are filling in for is not in a lower division.

How do I improve/develop my game?

Try Tag Rugby offers Tag Rugby team coaching sessions and free Ladies coaching days. In the future we are also likely to offer coaching sessions for groups of individual players.

We always love to hear from people who are enjoying their experience with Try Tag Rugby. There are a number of ways you can help us spread the word.

1.      Send us a testimonial and we’ll add it to the testimonials section of our website. Even better, if you’ve got a google account, look us up on google maps and leave a testimonial there.

2.      Ask us for some posters or flyers. If you have anywhere you could put an A3 or A4 poster or leave some A6 flyers, speak to your local competition supervisor and they can pass on some posters of flyers. Places of interest could include your office, gym or building notice board.

3.      Post an advert on your office intranet. Email info@trytagrugby.com and we can send you some text to go in the advert.

4.      Tell your friends about the free staster sessions coming up.

How do I apply to become a referee?

We are constantly looking for new people interested in getting involved as a referee. We are looking for all types of referees, ranging from those who only referee, to those who may play one night of the week and referee on another night and those who are available to referee on the same night as playing.

There is no need for new referees to have refereed any sport before. Try Tag Rugby hold regular referees workshops and training. There are a number of ways to start refereeing dependant on your experience level.

All referees are reimbursed for each match they look after. We understand that refereeing isn’t easy, so if you sign up to referee, you will be well trained and well rewarded for your time.
