Spring Tag Rugby Tournament review 2023

Try Tag Rugby’s Spring Tournament took place on Saturday 1st April with a break in the rain a welcome relief for all teams. Taking place at King’s House Sports Ground for the first time, 94 teams battled it out for glory across four separate divisions.

In a replay of the the final of TagFest 2022, which had taken place at the same venue, the all conquering Turtles faced off against the Cuzzies. Having won all three major tournaments last year, the Turtles couldn’t have been a tougher test for the Cuzzies, yet it was the underdogs who went into an early lead through Irish Men’s Open captain Paul McCullagh. Turtles worked hard to try and even it up but were undone by McCullagh’s footwork a second time to go 2-0 down. A fierce battle was played out to the final whistle with the veteran winners threatening to take yet another final to drop-off but ultimately Cuzzies held on to win their first major tournament crown! A healthy crowd cheered on both teams before staying long into the night for another classic TTR tournament after party.

The Division 2 champions were Loosey Goosey Baby! who progressed from winning the Division 2 Plate at the Autumn tournament. Division 3 was won by The Taquila Kids with the Buck-Tooth Nope-Ropes taking out Division 4.

A special mention goes to Mossbourne Victoria Park Academy who entered a team of pupils into Division 4. Despite none of their players having played any tag before January they made their way through to the Division 4 Plate final where they narrowly missed out on silverware at the first time of asking.
