After an exciting year of TTR tournaments that saw the return of the Men’s & Women’s Tournament, the biggest ever UK Tag Nationals, and an ever expanding UK wide TagFest series we are delighted to launch our full events calendar for 2024 which has something for every section of our community nationwide.
One Day Tournaments
Our three main tournaments in London will once again be the Spring Tournament (6th April – King’s House), TagFest London (8th June – Richmond Athletic Ground) and the Autumn Tournament (26th October – King’s House). The Spring Tournament and TagFest London are now open for registration!
Each event has a focus on a slightly different aspect of the game – the Spring Tournament is designed to find the best club side from each of the elite, intermediate and beginner levels of our community; TagFest London will continue to provide the biggest and best off-field entertainment as well as adding other sports alongside Rugby League to bring a wider audience to the world of Tag; while the Autumn Tournament is an opportunity for all the new summer teams to test themselves against some of the more established sides in our community.
June sees London kick-off our nationwide series of TagFest tournaments with Brighton & Hove running their inaugural event alongside returning offerings from Wigan, Oxford and Bristol in July before Coventry, Leeds and Edinburgh round out the festival season in August. All these events provide a great opportunity from teams around the country to go on tour and experience what each region has to offer.
Following a successful return this November we are pleased to announce that an expanded Women’s and Men’s Tournament will run at Wasps FC on Saturday 21st September. Despite the scaled down size of this year’s event teams from Brighton, Bristol and Yorkshire still made the trip to London and we look forward to seeing even more regional representation at the popular tournament next year.
Social Events
Try Tag Rugby turns 15 in 2024! To celebrate the last decade and a half in style we are going to run a social tournament unlike anything we have ever run before. Full details will be announced shortly but get yourselves ready for a knockout tournament that will see the game of Tag, revamped, reimagined and supercharged for one night only on Friday 6th September at Richmond Athletic Ground.
For those of you who love cruising the Thames at our annual London Boat Party, fear not as your opportunity to do so will come earlier this year as we take advantage of the summer weather by climbing aboard on Friday 2nd August. The 2023 return of the Tagmas events at multiple league venues will continue next December with many TTR regions around the country hosting local Christmas parties as well.
Corporate and Charity Events
One of the earliest events of the year will see our charity partners, Tag Sports CIC, run a women’s only tournament on Sunday 17th March. All the proceeds from the event will be invested directly into the work they are doing to develop the women’s game. More information is available on tagsportsuk.org.
The London Corporate Challenge has long been our flagship event for your companies to use Tag as a combined staff social, team building activity, and networking event with winning teams able to nominate a charity of their choice for the prize pot to be donated to. In 2024 Tag Sports CIC will take over the hosting of the tournament to further strengthen the charitable credentials of the tournament and raise funds for their programmes. Try Tag Rugby staff and referees will continue to assist with the delivery of this popular event.
A second London Corporate Challenge will then be run at East London RFC in July with companies welcome to sign up for both should they wish while Yorkshire will again host their own iteration of the tournament with the exact date and venue to be announced in the new year.
UK Tag Nationals
Following the positive response to the two Regional Tournaments in Oxford and Manchester last year, they will return in 2024 with a London version also taking place. 24th February will see teams from Edinburgh, Manchester, Sheffield, Wigan and Yorkshire converge on Heaton Moor RUFC. A week later, 2nd March the Brighton & Hove, Bristol, Coventry & Warwickshire and Thames Valley sides will meet at Oxford RFC before the series rounds out with the four London regions playing at King’s House on 9th March. All three tournaments will double as GB trials for players from those regions with the national team coaches in attendance.
Following these warm-up tournaments, the 2024 UK Tag Nationals itself will take place at the University of Warwick, Coventry on 11th May. This is the second time the national championships will be contested outside London and the first time that they will be hosted in the Midlands. Brighton & Hove will be entering teams for the first time with invitational teams across the five categories being announced over the next couple of months. A Women’s 33s category will be run for the first time, returning the tournament to having parity between the number of female and male competitions.
Great Britain Tag Rugby
2023 was a year of history-making success for Great Britain with the eight sides combining to win six World Cup medals (including Gold for Women’s 30s) as well as regaining the British and Irish Cup! A new World Cup cycle begins in 2024 with the programme’s players, coaches and staff aiming for ever greater heights and further success.
The three Regional Tournaments will be the main pathway for players to be selected for their country but the London edition will also include an open section for players who do not represent a UK Tag Nationals region. The selected sides will then turn their focus to training ahead of the July internationals and later the British & Irish Cup which will take place on the 24-25th August in Dublin. The details of the July home tests are currently being finalised with GB’s opposition and will be announced soon.
