3 Years, 4 Major Life Events, 70 Teams.
When Clodagh Nic Lochlainn launched Try Tag Rugby Edinburgh just over three years ago, she had big ambitions from the outset. With a sharp mind for business and a genuine passion for Try Tag Rugby, she saw an opportunity to bring the sport she loved to her city and build something special alongside her full-time career.
Today, Try Tag Rugby Edinburgh has grown into one of Scotland’s most vibrant sporting communities, with 70 teams, nearly 850 weekly players at its peak, 30 referees and 13 part-time staff all working together to make Tag Rugby one of Edinburgh’s most exciting social scenes.
With three sold-out TagFests, plus legendary (often sold out) end-of-season socials such as a 200-person Céilidh, the community’s impact is much more than just the activity on the pitch. It’s even caught the eye of the business world, earning two Causeway award shortlist nominations. That’s impressive by anyone’s standards but even more so when you realise she’s built it all alongside a full-time job, a career move, a new home, a wedding and, most recently, a baby. In that time, she’s kept the leagues growing, built a strong local team, and created a thriving community of players who love the fun, friendship and fitness Tag Rugby offers.
“Getting involved with Try Tag Rugby as a licensee was a great step into a sports business for me, a great blend of the two things I’m passionate about,” says Clodagh. “The support and organisation from the TTR team have been brilliant for someone who works full time but wanted to make a difference in my area through sport.”
What started as a side hustle has become something much bigger. Proof that with passion, planning and support, it’s possible to build a business that fits around your life and makes a real impact on your community.
If you’ve ever dreamed of building something that makes a difference but worried life might get in the way, Clodagh’s story shows that it’s possible to have ambition and chase big goals without putting the rest of your life on hold.
She’s proof that a full life and a successful franchise can go hand in hand.
At the recent Try Tag Rugby annual conference, Clodagh included the following quote from Michael Jordan in her presentation:“Some people want it to happen, some wish it would happen, and others make it happen.”
Now it’s over to you, which type of person are you?
