Glitter, tag and rainbows were the scene down on Clapham Common on the 27th of June where Try Tag Rugby held our first ever Pride Month event, in support of the Terrence Higgins Trust. It was a collection of 12 teams playing three pool games and finals but with a twist….
Extra points were appointed for flare – we’re talking impressive play, singing, dancing and cold lil cellies. We saw slam dunks, a whole team ‘cancan’ and spectacular feats of gymnastics ability whilst tries were being made. There were refs dressed in technicoloured kits and rainbow sunglasses as they performed Pink Pony Club via their whistles.
We held a bake sale to raise much needed funds for the Terrence Higgins Trust, which saw many brownies and focaccia scoffed down right before each kick off. In the end we not only had the winners of the tournament but a longggggggggg line up of winners for things such as best dressed, best make up, most elaborate outfit, and our wonderful referee of the tournament went home in brand new pink fluffy slippers!
Winners of the tournament fought long and hard in absolutely beautiful Summery sun conditions.
Winners
Bowl: The Acton Aardvarks
Plate: The Price is Bi
Cup: Tagkeshi (YTG)
As the conditions were so solid, we were in much need of staying happy and hydrated. We were lucky enough to stay hydrated with the help of Jubel. The sweet nectar of the beer Gods blessed us with a can for every player to have post games. If you haven’t already next time your picking up pints for your Summer picnic make sure to choose Jubel they are the beer of the Summer.
We the partied the night away at our partner pub The Rookery, where more pints and friendships were formed. Big thanks to all of those who were involved, both players and organisers, we ended up raising an awesome £880 pounds for the Terrence Higgins Trust, who aspire to stop all new cases of HIV by 2030!
