As the Women’s Rugby Union World Cup kicks off, there’s another kind of rugby taking off right here at home. It’s being played in Tag shorts and tights, not scrum caps and mouthguards.
In the past 12 months, nearly 6,000 women have taken to the pitch each week in Try Tag Rugby’s mixed leagues across the UK. That’s thousands of women out there playing hard, having fun, and building a strong, supportive community.
And here’s the thing. Over half of our players had never played any kind of rugby before they joined. No Union, no League, no Sevens, no Touch. Just people turning up, giving it a go, and getting hooked. On top of that, more than 1,100 women have come along to a Free Taster Session in the last year.
The growth is real, and it’s not slowing down. The upcoming Tag Sports CIC Women’s Tournament is set to welcome around 30 teams, smashing the previous UK record of 20. Far from being a one-off, this tournament is a milestone in the steady expansion of women’s Tag across the country.
Importantly, it’s not just about one big tournament. Tag Sports CIC, supported by funding from Sport England, is delivering free women’s and girls’ sessions across London over the next 12 months. They’ve already helped deliver girls’ Tag Rugby in Brighton, and as the partnership grows, more opportunities will be rolled out nationwide. This is about building sustainable pathways so women and girls can access Tag at every level.

Whether you’re watching the pros on the world stage or just getting started with friends after work, one thing’s clear. Women’s rugby is thriving, and Tag is helping to lead the charge at grassroots level.
